Horse Power
Zans Bar Chex | Dot Com
2000 Grey Gelding
Dot Com is the horse of a lifetime. He came to me as a finished head horse and is absolutely in a class by himself. He’s incredibly quick and strong out of the box and handles steers very well. His extreme sensitivity that contributes to his great athleticism also means he’s mentally very sensitive. We invested a lot of time helping him learn to relax and stand in the box, as well as overcome some physical issues. They say a special horse will not only change your life, they will define it. Dot Com is that horse for me, and we are so blessed to have him.
Lowrys Soda | Frosty
1995 Bay Roan Gelding
Frosty was a special horse my family raised – an own son of Lowry Star. I trained him as a head horse and went on to win numerous saddles early in his career. In 2008 he overreached, delivering a serious blow to his pastern. This lead to the development of high ring bone and he’d been mostly retired ever since. I enjoyed having Frosty in my life as a partner and friend for over 24 years. In his retirement, it had become a tradition to saddle him up every Easter to enjoy a ride around the pasture for old times sake. He sadly developed some health challenges in 2019 and was peacefully laid to rest.
Whizzen Nines | Gus
1991 Grey Gelding
I bought Gus during my senior year of college. He was seven years old but only had 30 days of heading on him and was very green. He was my greatest challenge, but also earned more winnings for me than any other horse. He was very unconfident by nature and his lack of experience & education combined with mine was a frustrating match initially. I hung in there with Gus, and in 2001 he carried me to a second place finish at the USTRC Finals. By his late teens he’d become solid & dependable and moved on to a loving family with young children where he spent over ten years helping kids “learn the ropes.”
Casino Star Buck | Butkus
1982 Buckskin Gelding
Butkus was named after the famous, intimidating football player, Dick Butkus. They had a lot in common. Butkus was an extremely athletic and strong horse that grunted when he ran down the arena. The Chicago Bears linebacker’s namesake even had a roached mane that matched his crew cut at the time. Butkus had a special confidence about him and he would just come alive under the rodeo lights. I won the Rope the Rockies Finals in 1995 heading on him. My brother Tyler qualified on the heel side for the National High School Rodeo Finals where they placed second in the first go and went on to qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo.
Prairie Lord | Bandit
1982 Blue Roan Gelding
Bandit was the horse I learned to head on. He was an incredibly solid and dependable gelding for my entire family for many years. In 1995 on New Years Day in Brighton, Colorado, Bandit carried me to a special Rope the Rockies win, where we placed first in the shootout and I was awarded a horse trailer. Bandit taught my sister-in-law to head, and was one of the first horses my brother put his son on to learn to ride.
